Dance Against Cancer 2016

Friday October 7, 2016 - Huntington, W.Va. - In conjunction with “Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” 4th Avenue Arts is proud to present “Dance Against Cancer” the first event of it's kind in our community. A local team of breast cancer survivors and 4th Avenue Arts artists teamed up to bring these courageous and inspiring stories of survival to life through movement, music and visual arts.

“I was honored and excited to be included in this event,” Robin Riner, artist and instructor for 4th Avenue Arts said about this event. “Working with Tara was a joy, as she was so open to sharing her story. I was inspired to try and find a way to turn her pain and triumph into a piece that would both represent her personal journey and also speak to others who've

experienced pain, loss, courage, and hope in their own unique ways. I hope she and the other survivors really enjoy the event, as it was a privilege to be able to work with all of them.” Tara Sink, a survivor of breast cancer worked with Robin in sharing her story to help create a piece in conveying her story to others through performance arts. “I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer in April 2014. I have had six surgeries in two years, including a double mastectomy, hysterectomy, and several reconstructions,” Sink said. “ I am very excited to be a part of Dance Against Cancer. I have always loved dance and music, and think this is a beautiful way to tell survivor stories. I look forward to seeing how my dancer will portray my journey.”

Our audience had the opportunity to learn more about our six survivors and their stories during this event. Afterwards, we celebrated in style with a post-performance reception of wines and cheeses. We invite everyone to join us next year in an evening of celebrating life, these survivors, their stories and bringing awareness to the fight that many are still fighting each and every day.
